When working on a direction for the music of Hair, I spent a lot of time comparing and contrasting the Original Broadway Cast Recording with the New Broadway Cast Recording. I was not listening to arrangement or lyrics, but what the song feels and sounds like. I looked at production techniques and whether it sounds like it came from a certain era. While it is all the same music, it sounds different due to the time it was recorded. The original sounds very warm and “vintage,” emulating the way a lot of the tracks sounded in the 1960s, as they were recorded on analog gear. I decided to blend two production techniques together and having a balance of both warm and clear. The band emulated the sound from the 60s while the vocals kept their clarity from newer recording technology.
Berger’s SFX Moments
Moments before Berger drops out of school, he reenacts the sequence of events that led to his drop out. We used this as an opportunity to play with sound effects and emphasize the silliness of Berger’s character.
